COSMO

A NEW APPROACH IN ELECTRIC GUITAR DESIGN

FREELY MOVABLE &
INTERCHANGEABLE PICKUPS
AUDIBLE BODY RESONANCE FOR PERCUSSIVE PLAYING
60% LESS PARTS,
A MILLION MORE OPPORTUNITIES

Why Cosmo?

Cosmos core feature is its freely movable and easily exchangeable pickup system. Sounds complex, but it’s wonderfully simple: The magnetic pickups stay on the sheet metal surface by themselves. Find almost infinite sound colors by moving the pickups!

Without making any compromises in sound, playability and ergonomics, the instrument is reduced to the maximum. The simple construction of Cosmo makes it possible for me to produce custom instruments in Germany at a reasonable price.

With Cosmo you have a sustainably produced electric guitar in your hands. You can actively participate of its creation process and it offers you the opportunity to break new ground in your music.

Sound

The answer to most important question: Yes, Cosmo sounds like a solidbody guitar should sound. Its sound is rich in overtones with the right amount of pressure and warmth, and it doesn’t sound “tinny” at all in the trebles. The neck through construction and the massive brass riders of the bridge give Cosmo the typical twang and power of an electric guitar with a massive body. The long neck creates a sustain similar to an archtop guitar. Because of the sheet metal, body resonance is now audible wich adds nice acoustic like overtones. The individual timbre depends on the pickup used and its position. In addition, the bent sheet metal body of the electric guitar serves as a very effective grounding and shielding – placing the arm on the body has the same noise-reducing effect as touching the strings.

PICKUPS

For the electric guitar Cosmo I use “Magnet Mount Pickups” which I designed and manufactured. Thanks to their neodymium magnets, they stick to the metal body and can be moved around. Now you can find your very own sound: Under the strings, the “Magnet Mount Pickup” becomes the neck, middle, bridge and “everything in between” pickup. Moving it towards the treble or bass strings also reduces or amplifies them partially. If the pickup is off the strings, the instrument sounds distant and dreamy. Hold it in your hand while playing and fall in love with the intuitive swells.

The “Magnet Mount Pickups” have a pleasant wooden surface and are equipped with a robust Teflon-coated cable and SMB plugs.

Cosmo has two pickup inputs and a standard 6.3mm jack output, wired in either mono or stereo. I offer three different types of singlecoils and humbuckers. But also custom builds are no problem. You can read more about the different hum bucker and singlecoil types in the pickup section.

MADE IN GERMANY

From the neck to the sheet metal body to every single pickup – everything is made by Robin Stummvoll in its workshop in Kassel in the centre of Germany. The laser cutting and powder coating of the sheet metal is done by local craftsmen; The used tone wood is grown in Germany. I use Schaller M6 mini tuning mechanics and recommend vegetable-tanned Richter guitar straps because of their quality and simplicity.

COLORS

The sheet metal is powder coated in RAL colors with a glossy surface in industrial quality. The thick coating is tougher than a painted surface and therefore does not flake off immediately, even with strong impacts. The surface ages similar to a regular plastic pickguard. It will bear its marks, especially by the movement of the pickups, and will develop a patina over time.
The color representation of the following pictures varies depending on the monitor used – therefore a RAL color fan is recommended.

TYPES OF WOOD

I am convinced that native tone woods are in no way inferior to tropical woods and, for sustainable reasons, I only use native timbers. Three types of wood are always available: ash, maple and walnut. Also cherry, pear, apple, plum or oak can be realized on request. Since every tree and thus every wood is unique, we will discuss the details, such as grain structure and fiber course, in the building process. The wood is carefully selected and stored for years. The veneer of the headstock, the fingerboard, the neck as well as the pickups and the bridge are all made from the same piece.

Ergonomics

The sheet metal is carefully rounded at all points of contact with the body. It can be played comfortably in all sitting and standing positions. The large armrest with a radius of 6 cm (2 3/8″) is a charm. The slightly springy body nestles against you and heats up faster than the inert mass of a solid wood body. Cosmo weighs only about 2.5 kg and can be played for hours without back pain.

Simple but detailed

The neck appears simple, but is designed with great attention to detail: Its shape follows the fingerboard with conical radius (compound radius) to the characteristic asymmetrical headstock. It is equipped with jumbo frets, which are carefully rounded or hemispherical at the fret ends, Schaller machine heads, a bone nut with inserted steel dowel pin (also in Tusq/vegan), an oversized 62 cm long dual action truss rod, a solid brass bridge and three different neck profiles – just to name a few features. The steel body is connected to the neck with only one screw and is locked in precisely and without any play.

Mono bags

The Mono M80 Stealth® bag is the right companion for Cosmo not only because of its clean look: Its patented head locking system protects the instrument from impacts and drops. The top-loading system allows quick access and the comfortable padding allows you to carry the bag for hours, while magnetic quick-release sternum straps provide additional support by relieving pressure on your shoulders.

The bag also includes a hidden pocket for your magnetic mount pickup box (included with every Pickup) and additional pockets for cables, notes, etc.
